MPP Fife advocates for Weekend GO train service connecting Kitchener to Toronto

QUEEN’S PARK – NDP MPP Catherine Fife (Waterloo) rose in Question Period today to advocate for expanded GO train service between Kitchener and Toronto.

“Without consistent GO train service, the people of Kitchener and Waterloo are literally getting left behind by the Ford government,” said Fife. “When trains don’t run on the weekend, demand is so high that the replacement buses have been leaving people behind, forced to endure long wait times for another bus.”

According to the President and CEO of the K.W. Chamber of Commerce, expanded GO train service from Kitchener to Toronto could deliver up to 170,000 new jobs for the region, and billions in new direct investment from the private sector.

“Earlier this week, I was proud to present a petition in legislature from students in Kitchener-Waterloo who have collected hundreds of signatures calling for expanded service,” Fife said. “The level of frustration from students and businesses have reached a tipping point – I join them in demanding better for our region.”

On Tuesday, the Waterloo Regional Council voted to send a letter to this government urging them to finally take action.

Fife stressed: “Trains are good for business, and good for people. The people of Waterloo Region need, and deserve, all-day, every-day, two-way GO trains from Kitchener to Toronto. The people of my community are demanding and advocating for expanded service – and I will fight alongside them until we secure it.”
