QUEENS PARK – After the Ontario NDP’s bill to declare Intimate Partner Violence an epidemic passed second reading, MPP Jennie Stevens spoke in the legislature this morning demanding Ontario act on next steps:
"Ontario took one step closer to seriously investing in the necessary resources to eradicate gender-based violence, thanks to the tireless work of frontline service providers and experts from across Ontario," said Stevens. "Only a few months ago, Niagara mourned a life lost to femicide. Our bill yesterday had a single, crystal-clear ask – to declare an epidemic and recognize this problem that requires bold action to protect families and prevent further tragedies."
At Queen's Park yesterday, advocates and survivors stood up and spoke out - that’s what real leadership is all about. Acknowledging we are in an epidemic only works if it come with concrete action. We don't need more studies, we need action. We need to listen to what survivors and advocates are telling us loud and clear. The work is just getting started."
