Ontario NDP MPPs stand in solidarity with the Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care

QUEEN’S PARK – Teresa Armstrong, NDP critic for Child Care, released the following statement for the Child Care Now’s National Day of Action, in solidarity with the Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care (OCBCC), Early Childhood Educators (ECEs), and families and advocates from across Ontario:

“Every November, this day serves as a powerful reminder of the critical role that ECEs play in the lives of children, families, and our communities. ECEs are the backbone of our childcare system, but they face untenable challenges. Workers and families alike are suffering the consequences of a lack of leadership from the Ford Government on these important issues.

“The government’s promises for $10-a-day childcare cannot succeed without a strong, supported workforce. ECEs need a clear wage grid, better working conditions, and respect for their expertise to stay in this critical field. Parents and educators alike are united in this cause because we understand that investing in child care is investing in the future.

“On this Day of Action, let’s commit to standing with ECEs—not just today, but every day—until they get the support they need. Ontario’s children and families depend on it.”

The Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care (OCBCC), alongside the Ontario NDP, are raising awareness for:

  • Workforce shortages that are pushing the system to the brink. Families across Ontario are struggling to find care as centers close or reduce hours because there simply aren’t enough qualified staff.
  • A lack of a proper Wage Grid  means that ECEs—who do some of the most important work in our society—are often paid far less than their value. Without clear and fair compensation tied to experience and qualifications, many are forced to leave the profession for better-paying, more stable opportunities.
  • Programs like the Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care’s Parent Advocacy Program, which show just how engaged and determined families are to fight for improvements. Parents know that when ECEs thrive, their children thrive too. They’re stepping up to demand a better system, one that ensures affordable care, fair wages, and a sustainable workforce.
